9/11 and other victories for violence
Call me a masochist, but last night I put myself through four hours of hell. I'm speaking of the National Geographic channel's take on "Inside 9/11". I have long advocated that the networks ought to re-run the footage every night, the way Ted Koppel kept score during the Iranian hostage event. We should not forget the events of that morning, and God help us, we have already begun to do so. The movie versions are coming to the big screen near you. There was enough outrage pouring out of the small screen last night. I don't need Oliver Stone and Nicholas Cage to tell me what I saw that day. The screams and tears of my nurse [I was in the hospital; don't we all remember where we were?] and the pain when I tore my IVs out and leaped from the bed are still fresh in my memory. The folks over at National Geographic earn high praise; their program was dispassionate, and informative. They didn't sensationalize, and there was no obvious agenda driving their reportage. For all of that, reliving the horror on a timeline was an occasion for much cursing and crying in the Possum Den.
So, I wake this morning, and see the last of the Israeli clean-up on The West Bank. They, too, earn kudos for conducting their operations in a civilized and restrained manner. However, and here's where the other shoe drops, have they done the right thing? Even before the remnants of the Gaza and West Bank settlers were cleared out, dedicated members of Hamas were marching towards one of the settlements, declaring their undying enmity for Israel and America, and maneuvering to get within rifle range of the settlement. I made a joke about it, but it ain't funny.
Will any amount of appeasement, equivocation, and unilateral surrender matter to those who belong to the death cult of Islam? America has her own death cultists; the abortionists and the euthanasia advocates are in the forefront. Is a reward for death the right path? Is it right to acknowledge homicide bombing, crashing airplanes into buildings, or any other form of "martyrdom"? I sit here in my dotage, wondering how this will all end, and come up with gloomy scenarios about the deployment of thermonuclear weapons within ten years. The ruthlessness of the death cultists is not going to be appeased by "cooperation" on some imaginary "roadmap to peace". This is going to get uglier than anyone wants to imagine.

It truly is time for Americans, indeed the world, to get their heads out of the sand and recognize that we face an enemy that does not believe in taking prisoners, only in destroying and defiling them.
OK, that's enough gloom for today! Man, what a downer!
But honestly, I have to agree. I see a nuclear attack on the horizon. I feel the danger looms greater for this in the near future than it did in my school daze of "duck and cover". Sitting back and appeasing doesn't work, though, so let's keep goin' after 'em!
The Israel situation is probably hopeless but this is a different tack. Maybe it will help. I doubt it, though...
I just get so angry at the appeasers sometimes, Beerme!
No one seems to learn. The U.S. can clear out of the Middle East, and Israel can jump into the ocean. It won't matter; they want us dead, dead, dead!
I,for one, will not go so quietly. I doubt the Israelis will, either. I think Mr. Sharon has made a colossal mistake. We shall see.
The difference between courage and stupidity? Fine line there but the pull out had good reasons much as Washington did in the Revolutionary war. He picked his battles when he could win and saved the army when the odds were against him. Much as General Lee did for the Southern folk right up until Gettysburg.
Israel's more immiadiate concern is the declining number of Jewish citizens within their borders. If the Palastinians continue to breed at current rates they will out number the Jews in of voting age in about 10 years. First things first, preserve their country then worry about expanding their borders into Gaza.
Thems the cold hard facts.
Hey Possum,
I think Sharon might be making a mistake from a Biblical perspective. I mean, the Bible says the land belongs to the Jews. That's why they settled there in the first place. To pull out now suggests that they have no legal right to the land.
On the other hand, according to one eschatological viewpoint (look that up in your Funk & Wagnalls), the land will not truly belong to the Jews until Jesus Christ Himself returns at the Second Coming and presents it to the Jews. In other words, the Jews may be crying over something that is not yet rightfully theirs anyway.
In any case, Sharon is employing a tactic which is part of a larger strategy that may or may not work. That is, pull the Jews out of Gaza and out of the West Bank. Put up a wall between Israel and the Palestinians. In effect, give the "Pals" their own state and don't give them access to Israel. Give the Pals a chance to show what they will do with their new found homeland. After all, if they screw up, you know the Jews can just march right back in there and take it back in a week or two.
Besides... sometimes fences make good neighbors. It forces the Jews to get on the "correct" side of the fence. Furthermore, it teaches the "Pals" a lesson by excluding them from the benefits of commerce with Israel... (it's pretty tough to have a job in Israel if there's a wall between you and your job). Too bad. My nose bleeds for them.

I think it's a mistake...but I'd be interested to know how the Gaza region fits into the historical geography of the nation of Israel. After all, it was something the Israelis took in the late 60's, in retribution for the Seven Days War...
I also am unsure of this decision. I don't think you can appease a mad dog. By throwing them a "bone" about all Israel can do is say " We took the high road" Then if the useless dogs keep attacking the Israelis can have a better conscience about unleashing every sort of hell imaginable.
I also believe a Nuke attack on U.S. is a matter of when, not if.
Kajun,
Agreed... 100%.
Camojack,
The Gaza strip as it is now defined was originally part of the land that was given to the tribe of Judah (see Joshua chapters 18-19 regarding the distribution of the land). It was definitely part of the kingdom of Israel during the reigns of David and Solomon.

Thanks...
Just Lurkin Possum.
It's going to get ugly beyond belief. People will be shot in the streets for existing. It ain't gonna be right; it ain't gonna be fair. It will happen.
New post! New post! NEW POST!!!
Ok possum,
I have sent a multitude of messages to you with the local possums. Apparently they don't travel far. Should I hire a racoon or skunk for faster delivery?
Love 'da wood and all inhabitants,
just please ask them to leave my garbage alone. If they are hungry, just knock on the door and say so....
