Possum, Agree with most everything you say, but feel compelled to comment on a few items...
anyone living today who attempts to play a “race card” as justification for anything is as guilty of racism as rabid as that of our ancestors... which means that Democrats are about as "rabid" as they come. You don't hear about successful conservative black people playing the race card. You hear about people like Obama, Al Sharpton and Jessie Jackson doing that.
We didn’t like the Irish, the Chinese, the Jews, Latinos, or the free blacks when they arrived here... They didn't like the Poles much either as my grandparents could attest to (if they were still alive).
immigrants -- mostly from Europe -- decided that there could be no accommodation or co-existence with the native peoples of this land, so we set out to exterminate them... Apparently there were Caucasians in North America (the Clovis people) 9-10,000 years ago, so the term "native peoples" may no longer be 100% accurate (ask Hankmeister). However, I understand where you're coming from and agree that Europeans did do some bad things.
Large parts of this vast country -- from sea to shining sea -- were bought, stolen, or conquered from others who were here first.... It is easy to romanticize the "native Americans" as "owning" the land. Yes, they were here when the Europeans came, but they hardly considered themselves "owners". They were more like nomads, squatters or scavengers (hunter-gatherers). They moved about, took what the land had to offer, didn't give much back, and then moved on. They were mostly non-territorial, and non-agricultural, while the Europeans were agricultural and VERY territorial.
“all men are created equal,” but [...] stupidity, avarice, or laziness might kick in later for a lot of people... I contend that all men (and women too) have a God-given right to be stupid, lazy or poor if they so choose. They don't have a right to be compensated for their stupidity, laziness or poverty.
As I was reading through this one (after reading part II above), I had some of the same thoughts as Hawkeye. I started to comment on Part II, but instead continued into Part I. So I actually read things backwards. My son-in-law is Latino and he is opposed to illegal immigration, as am I. He also is opposed to the current Arizona law, although I am not. His opposition comes from the potential for abuse of the system. The other area I would comment on is the racism angle. You will find racism alive and well in the Democrat party. they believe the blacks, Hispanics, etc must be cared for because . . . {whisper} they are inferior {/whisper}. The patronizing leads to dependency on Massa's good graces and they hope to secure votes for their racist ideas. Some stupid Republicans think that they cannot comment on this latent racism or they would lose those same votes. Both are despicable. Okay, now I can comment on Part II.

Looking forward to Part II.
